The first of several hearings to determine the fate of Valley Green Golf Course will be held later this month.

Newberry Township officials will host a zoning hearing at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Newberry Township Fire Department at 2145 York Haven Road.

The session was previously scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, but officials changed the date to avoid a conflict of interest, they said.

At stake is the 100-acre course that serves as a manicured backyard to residents who live in a cul-de-sac along the public golf course.

McNaughton Homes, the owner of the Valley Green, this summer proposed to amend zoning for the golf course from open space to residential, making room for a 400-unit development.The plan would pave the township's only green space.

In July, the Valley Green Residents Organization formed to create awareness and stall the plan, attending public meetings and hosting rallies to raise awareness of its cause.

Most recently, the York County Planning Commission on Tuesday recommended Valley Green be rezoned to a residential district, said Kurt Leitholf, chief of the municipal planning section.

The Newberry Township Planning Committee last month rejected McNaughton's proposal in a 3-2 vote that supported the current zoning of the golf course.

Neither recommendation is binding. Both will be submitted to the Newberry Township supervisors, who will decide after the series of hearings.


The first hearing this month will be devoted to a presentation from McNaughton on the proposed zoning change, according to the Valley Green Residents Organization.

Two more meetings will be held - one devoted to the residents' argument in favor of the current zoning and one for the supervisors to vote, according to the organization.

The dates for those meetings haven't been determined.

Newberry Township officials have received numerous complaints from residents, said Don Keener, township manager.
