A much-used traffic signal along a heavily traveled road in York Township will be removed early next week.

The state Department of Transportation announced Thursday the signal at the intersection of Chambers Road and Mount Rose Avenue is slated to be taken down on Wednesday. It will be replaced with a stop sign on Chambers Road.

The removal could be delayed if inclement weather hits the area, said Greg Penny, PennDOT spokesman.

A number of new traffic restrictions will accompany the removal.

Motorists won't be allowed to make left turns from Chambers Road to Mount Rose Avenue and will only be allowed to turn right onto Chambers Road.

Eventually a concrete island will be constructed to control the turns, Penny said.

"They're going to build a concrete molded curb where you won't be able to make that turn," Penny said.

No turns: A number of residents who live in a development along Chambers Road typically used intersection to make left turns to get to nearby Interstate 83, said Jeff Sholly, engineer for York Township.

"At this point, a lot of people make a left to get down to 83," he said.

Now that residents won't be able to use the intersection to go left, they'll have to wind their way through a development to Cape Horn Road in order to make a left onto Mount Rose Avenue.


Elizabeth Heathcote, township manager, said it remains to be seen how the removal will affect traffic.

"We'll just have to wait and see," she said.

Projects: Penny said the signal removal will bring increased safety on Mount Rose Avenue where the signaled Chambers Road intersection is less than half a mile from another signalized intersection at Cape Horn Road.

The removal will also allow for Mount Rose Avenue to be widened, which is an ongoing project.

The $3.2 million project, which began in April, will see Mount Rose Avenue widened from Hartford Road in Springettsbury Township to Cape Horn Road. It is expected to wrap up in spring 2015.

A second project, to be finished in fall 2015, will widen the intersection at Cape Horn Road and Mount Rose Avenue to allow for additional turning lanes.

The nearly $5.4 million project, will also see Cape Horn Road realigned with Mount Rose Avenue.

When complete, traffic flow through this intersection and on the Mount Rose Avenue corridor should move much better and more efficiently, Penny said.
