Firefighters in North Codorus Township battled a blaze at a family home on Christmas Eve.

The family of six -- two adults and four children -- was not home at 5290 Bentz Road when a neighbor saw the fire and called 911 at about 5 p.m. Tuesday, said Larry Wildasin, the township's fire chief.

Wildasin said firefighters had the blaze under control by about 6:30 p.m.

The fire started in a part of the house that appeared to have been added on to the original structure, and firefighters were able to contain the flames to that section of the house, Wildasin said.

The house is uninhabitable for now but is not a total loss, he said.

The Red Cross is assisting the family and a state police fire marshal is investigating the fire's cause, Wildasin said.
