Two New York men face drug charges after a Northern York County Regional Police officer stopped the car they were in for speeding in Franklin Township on Friday, police say.

The officer stopped the 2013 Nissan Altima, driven by Codey Ronald Pledger, 21, of Mallory, N.Y., on Route 15 just after 1:30 a.m. for allegedly doing 71 mph in a 55 zone, police said.

The officer smelled an odor of marijuana coming from the car when he approached it and found 2.5 ounces of marijuana in the car, police said.

The officer also found $736 in cash on passenger Edward Jason Laplante, 21, of Syracuse, N.Y., police said.

Both Pledger and Laplante are charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, according to police. Pledger was also cited for speeding, police said.

Both were taken to the county's central booking unit to be arraigned, police said.

Pledger is free on $20,000 bail, according to court records. Court records for Laplante could not be located.
