A Newberry Township woman is accused of robbing a Manchester-area restaurant with her 4-year-old child in tow.

April Nicole Kidd is in York County Prison and her child is with family, police said. Kidd, 23, of 1345 Conewago Ave., is charged with robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, endangering the welfare of a child and possession of heroin.

She is locked up on a total of $30,000 bail - $20,000 for the robbery charges and $10,000 on an unrelated theft case, according to court records.

According to charging documents, Kidd was eating dinner at Peking Chinese Restaurant, 4165 N. George St. in East Manchester Township, with her boyfriend and child about 6:15 p.m. Saturday when she went into the restroom after grabbing the purse of owner Feng Lin.

Lin's purse had been behind the counter of the restaurant, Northeastern Regional Police Chief Bryan Rizzo said.

Kidd returned the purse after leaving the bathroom, he said.

Missing cash: As Kidd and her family were leaving, Lin checked the purse, realized $2,500 was missing and yelled for Kidd to stop, charging documents state.

Lin and others chased Kidd out to the parking lot, documents state.

At that point, Kidd's boyfriend jumped in his car and fled, leaving Kidd and her child holding the proverbial bag, Rizzo said.

As she was holding her child with one arm, Kidd threatened to use her free hand to punch one of the people confronting her, documents allege.

Feared gun: "Then she started reaching in her jacket as if she was going to pull something out," the chief said.

Witnesses and Lin backed off, fearing Kidd might have a gun, he said.

Kidd took off on foot, running a short distance until her boyfriend picked her up, according to Rizzo.

But witnesses had taken down his license plate number before he fled, so police were able to track down Kidd, documents state, and she went to the police station to be questioned.

Confession alleged: She initially denied stealing the $2,500 but eventually confessed and claimed she tossed all the cash out the car window as she and her boyfriend were fleeing, documents state.

"That's what she says, but I don't buy it for a second," Rizzo said. "It doesn't make sense."

Officers scoured the area and couldn't find a trace of the cash, he said.

After arresting Kidd, police found heroin in her purse, documents allege.

Drug related?: Rizzo said he believes the robbery was likely drug-related, committed to support a heroin habit. He said he doesn't believe she planned the crime.

"I think it was just opportunity," he said. "She probably ... saw the purse and said, 'I think I'll see what's in there.'"

The chief said he doesn't think Kidd actually had a gun in her possession during the alleged robbery.

"It's not her M.O.," he said.

At this point, her boyfriend isn't being charged, Rizzo said.

Theft case: Kidd is accused of stealing $750 from the McDonald's at 4245 N. George St. in East Manchester Township, where she previously worked, Rizzo said.

It happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. Dec. 26, charging documents state.

Kidd was caught on video going into a safe located in the manager's office and taking the cash, according to documents.

She confessed to police on Jan. 20 and said she used the money to buy clothing for her kids, documents state.

For that incident, she is charged with theft and receiving stolen property.

Kidd, who police said also goes by the name Allison Markel, could not be reached for comment. It's unclear if she has retained an attorney.
