Police had to subdue a man who was armed with a knife and threatening to harm himself in Manchester Township on Sunday.

Northern York County Regional Police officers were sent to an address on Stillmeadow Lane for a report of a man who was outside with a large butcher knife and threatening to harm himself, said Chief Mark Bentzel.

As a precaution, officers closed off part of Stillmeadow Lane during incident, which started a little after 2 p.m.

Officers attempted to talk to the man for about an hour but he tried to run from the area. The officers fired a nonlethal beanbag at the man, but it had little affect on him, the chief said.

After a short foot chase, the officers had to use pepper spray to subdue him. He was taken to York Hospital.

No injuries were reported.

Charges against the man are expected to be filed in the coming days, Bentzel said.
