For years, police in York County have warned residents of the dangers of leaving their parked vehicles unlocked.

On Friday, a brazen crime drove that point home.

While rifling through an unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway of a home in the 900 block of Hickory Hill Lane in Springettsbury Township, a thief or thieves found the victim's garage-door opener and used it to open the garage, township police Detective Christopher Ford said.

Once inside the garage, the thief or thieves were able to steal the victim's red 2013 Subaru Impreza, he said. It has a license-plate number of DZV-1470.

The residents of the house were home at the time, police said.

Ford urged people to lock their vehicles and to remove house keys and garage-door openers from their vehicles.

Anyone with information about the crime, or who sees the stolen vehicle, is asked to call Springettsbury Township Police at (717) 757-3525 and ask for Ford.
