York Area Regional Police are warning residents of a phone scam in which a caller offers an extended vehicle warranty in exchange for cash.

Area residents reported to police that they received calls from (717) 759-3044, a Glen Rock-area phone number, that shows as being from Wal-Mart on caller IDs, according to a news release from police.

In a heavy accent, the caller offers an extended warranty for the would-be victim's vehicle in exchange for cash via a wire transfer. The caller knows the call recipient's name as well as the make, model and year of the vehicle he or she owns, police said.

"When someone you do not know asks you to wire money to them, it will most likely be a scam," police said.
