Tell the kids to go fish.

Youth ages 15 and under are invited to participate in the 15th Annual William Shaffer Trout Fishing Derby in York City.

The free event is from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Kiwanis Lake at North Newberry Street and Parkway Boulevard, the city's recreation & parks bureau announced Monday.

Registration begins at 7:15 a.m. The event is for children only.

The derby, which marks the start of trout season, will be held rain or shine.

The popular event annually attracts as many as 250 youth. Parents can help youth fish.

Prizes will be awarded for the largest trout caught.

The derby's rules for catching fish are consistent with state law. Trout must be 7 inches or longer to keep. An individual is limited to keeping no more than five fish.

Each year, the Izaak Walton League of York stocks Kiwanis Lake with trout so youth living in the city can have fishing experience.

Including the league, organizations working with the city to present the derby are York Kiwanis Club, Schaad Detective Agency, Gander Mountain and Bricker French Fries.
