A Maryland man allegedly punched a woman in the face as they and her young son were in a car parked in the Chick-Fil-A parking lot in Shrewsbury on Saturday.

Tyler Emory Dawson, 22, of Fairview Road in Gwynn Oak, Md., also allegedly assaulted a Southern Regional Police officer who responded to the scene, according to police.

Now Dawson is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, child endangerment and possession of a small amount of marijuana, police said. He is free on $5,000 bail.

Officers were sent to the 14665 Mount Airy Road restaurant for a 911 hang-up call and found a car blocking the exit of the parking lot, police said.

A woman with a bloodied face got out of the car and threw a bag of suspected marijuana at officers, police said.

Dawson also got out to the car and confronted the woman. Dawson allegedly resisted arrest when officers attempted to take him into custody, police said.

Officers had to use a stun gun to subdue Dawson, police said.

One of the officers suffered cuts and abrasion on his hands during the scuffle. He refused treatment and remains on duty, said Sgt. Darryl Smuck of Southern Regional Police.
