A 60-year-old York City woman is recovering after being shot — apparently for refusing to give her iced tea to armed robbers, police said.

Alice Demmitt, of Girard Avenue, was in satisfactory condition Thursday at York Hospital, a hospital spokesman said.

Demmitt bought three half-gallons of iced tea at Pak's Food Market, 750 E. Princess St., and was walking home just before 9 p.m. when she was approached by two males in an alley between East Princess and South Sherman streets, York City Police said.

Refused robbers: The males demanded she give them the iced tea, but Demmitt told them, "No, I don't have to," according to city Detective First Class Jeff Spence.

They shot her in the left thigh and fled the area, he said.

Demmitt walked the short distance back to her home, where a family member called 911, Spence said. Demmitt was taken to York Hospital by ambulance.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call city detectives at (717) 849-2219, or call the city's anonymous crime tip line, (717) 849-2204. Or anonymously text a tip to YORKTIPS at 847411.
