A Wrightsville-area woman was arraigned Tuesday in Lancaster County on homicide by vehicle, DUI and related charges resulting from a two-vehicle crash that killed a man last year.

Susquehanna Regional Police allege Shannon Rae Thurman, 30, had a blood-alcohol level of nearly twice the legal limit when the car she was driving crossed into the opposing lane of River Road in East Donegal Township on about 11:15 p.m. Dec. 28 and hit a van head on.

The driver of the oncoming van, 57-year-old Wagdy Beh Abdel Shaheed of Marietta, died in the crash.

He died of multiple traumatic injuries he suffered in the crash, according to Thurman's charging documents.

Thurman and a passenger in her car were injured in the crash, with Thurman flown to Hershey Medical Center. The passenger was taken to Lancaster General Hospital, documents state.

Blood-alcohol: According to the documents, Thurman, of 328 Brook Lane, Apartment B in Windsor Township, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.154, nearly twice the state's legal limit of 0.08.

Thurman allegedly acknowledged drinking alcohol before the crash to an air ambulance paramedic as she was being airlifted to Hershey, saying she "had a lot," documents state.

The injured passenger also told a police officer that he and Thurman had been drinking before the crash, documents state.

On top of the charges of homicide by vehicle and two counts of DUI, Thurman is also charged with two counts of aggravated assault and also was cited for alleged traffic violations, according to court records.

She is free on $100,000 unsecured bail, records state.

It is not known if Thurman has retained an attorney, and Thurman could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

A preliminary hearing before Lancaster County district judge Scott Albert is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 20, according to court records.
