Perhaps for the first time, Yorkers are invited to explore Fissel's School, one of York County's one-room schoolhouses.

The eight-grade, one-room school was built in 1896 and will be open to the public during a tour and open house from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

"This is probably the first open house for the public to attend," said John Hufnagel, chairman of the Glen Rock Historic Preservation Society. The society is sponsoring the first-ever event with the Southern York County School District.

Fissel's is located in front of Susquehannock High School, 3280 Fissels Church Road in Shrewsbury Township.

School history: Most of the one-room schools left have been converted into homes or other structures, Hufnagel said. Fissel's has been closed since about 1952, he said, and it's one of the very few one-room schools to have remained almost exactly as it was when it closed.

"The opportunity is there to see what school was like 60 years ago," Hufnagel said.

Since Fissel's closed, just about the only people inside who weren't on a field trip have been renovators, he said. Even Hufnagel hasn't been inside yet, he said, but he's seen photos.

"From what I saw in the pictures, it's very interesting — and you just have to wonder how they'd teach 50 or 60 kids at different grade levels, but they got it done," he said.

The event: At the open house, speakers will discuss the building's history, as well as its restorations in the late '70s or early '80s and how it landed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, Hufnagel said.

The open house will help show members of the public how their parents, grandparents or great-grandparents got their education, he said.

Hufnagel said the event is something he'd like to see continue, perhaps annually or every two years.

"I'd like to see it every year," he said. "Just because."
