The Eastern York Middle School was awarded the Governor's Award for Excellence in Academics this month, one of several schools in the county that has received such a distinction from Gov. Tom Corbett's office this year.

The middle school received a score of 91 percent on the school performance profile, which qualified the building for the award.

Superintendent Darla Pianowski announced the school's achievement at the school board meeting in June, and said middle school staff and students will see the banner hanging in the school when they return to the building in the fall.

The profiles were introduced last fall and rate school buildings on a scale of 0 to 100 based on students' performance on PSSAs, Keystones, and other factors such as attendance and graduation rates.

Schools that scored a 90 or higher on the profiles have received the governor's award.
