Know a local hero who deserves some recognition?

The local chapter of the American Red Cross wants to hear from you. For its 11th annual Heroes of York & Adams Counties celebration, the organization is accepting nominations for local individuals who have recently completed heroic and selfless acts.

Hearing about what heroes do for the community is "very important and heartwarming," said Nikki Otto, chapter manager of the American Red Cross of the Cumberland Valley. Several chapters throughout the U.S. have similar programs, she said.

Many ordinary people are out there helping to save lives, just like the Red Cross does every day, Otto said.

"They're just not always recognized for everything they do," she said. "We just felt it was a good way to honor people."

Nominees fall into 10 categories and are then reviewed and chosen by a committee, Otto said.

"We get quite a few nominations," she said.

Who's eligible: Nominees can be anyone in the community, and the good deeds don't have to be Red Cross-specific, Otto said.

"We've had a lot of nominations of people performing CPR to save someone's life," she said. "I think we've even had animals be nominated because they impacted lives one way or another."

Nominations will be accepted through Tuesday, Aug. 26. The committee usually reviews nominations at the end of September before announcing honorees, Otto said.

Honorees will be recognized at the 2014 Heroes of York & Adams Counties Awards Breakfast on Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Holiday Inn Holidome in West Manchester Township.

The event is open to the public, and tickets for the breakfast will be available soon.
