Santander Stadium will host York County's first Baby Stroller Derby later this month.

While the derby name might imply a need for speed, the event will be more of a stroll, organizer Jennifer Neal said.

"It's going to be a walk around the stadium," she said.

After the 10 a.m. march of strollers, families can enjoy a day of fun Saturday, Aug. 23, Neal said.

Pre-registration cost is $15, Neal said.

On the day of the kid-friendly event, registration will cost $25, she said.

The money collected from registrations will cover the operating costs of the event. Any money left over will go to charity, Neal said.

The activities: Festivities planned include face painting, story time, music, playground activities and food.

A baby-crawling contest — known as the Diaper Dash — is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. The cost to enter the Diaper Dash is $5, she said.

Neal is asking families to bring new or gently used strollers, which will be donated to new parents through organizations like the United Way.

The York County Industrial Development Authority is funding the derby's rental fee as part of an annual community event contest. The authority announced its 2014 winner earlier this year.

Neal said she's hoping the event becomes an annual one. She's hoping at least 100 people show up.

"It's just going to be a fun event for families," she said. "I would love to make it an annual event. We'll see how this event goes."
