A man is recovering after being shot in the leg Tuesday night in York City at the same time as other city residents were celebrating National Night Out.

Melvin James Miles, 34, of York, was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the calf, York City Police Chief Wes Kahley said.

Miles was treated at Memorial Hospital and released, a hospital spokesman said.

Kahley said Miles was shot about 8 p.m. near the corner of Tremont Street and Booth Avenue, the chief said. That's near East Princess Street.

Miles was uncooperative with officers trying to investigate the shooting, according to the chief.

"We're still trying to piece together what happened," Kahley said. "We want to investigate this as fully as we can, but it makes it much harder when the victim doesn't want to cooperate with us."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call York City Police at (717) 846-1234, or call the city's anonymous crime tip line, (717) 849-2204. Or anonymously text a tip to YORKTIPS at 847411.
