Downtown Inc on Tuesday announced the nominees for its Downtown First awards.

The York City organization will hold its awards ceremony in the Yorktowne Hotel Ballroom on Oct. 9.

There are multiple award categories: outstanding small business, large business, individual, volunteer, individual within an organization, merchant and new business.

The list does not break down the nominees into categories because some of the people and organizations have been nominated for several different ones, said Doug Knight, Downtown Inc's marketing director.

Knight said everyone up for an award has been nominated by someone in the York City community. These nominations were then passed along to a selection committee, which is made up of York City residents whose identities are secret.

"We don't even know who they are," Knight said with a laugh.

He said Downtown Inc removes itself from the selection process because they represent the merchants and businesses of York City and don't want to appear to play favorites.

"We don't want to seem to have any sort of bias on this," Knight said.
