Lori Goodlin, editor of The York Dispatch, is leaving to become print editor for Lancaster Newspapers Inc.

She begins her new position Monday, Sept. 8.

Leaving the Dispatch is "very difficult," Goodlin said.

"It's a great opportunity for me, but it doesn't come without hurt," she said.

Changing jobs is less about the Dispatch and more about Lancaster Newspapers, Goodlin said.

"They're doing a lot of new things, and I'm excited to be part of that organization as it moves forward," she said.

She was hired by publisher Dave Martens in 2005 and recently led the staff through four major changes.

During the last year, the Dispatch moved from its office in York City to the York Newspaper Company building in West Manchester Township, a new content management system was installed, the print product changed from an evening newspaper to a morning paper, and eight people took buyouts in a staff reduction.

"Lori was at the helm when we had big changes, and we survived. We are still holding together with a really strong group of reporters," Martens said.

The staff: Both Martens and Goodlin credited the staff with the newspaper's success.

"The resilience, talent, commitment and drive of the staff is what led us through, not me," she said.

Martens said he will lead the staff during a transition period in which he searches for the next editor of the Dispatch.

"I'm sure there's a good editor out there, and there's a lot more good work to be done in York," he said.

In the next editor, Martens is looking for someone with "excellent news judgment and a good leader for a grand bunch of people," he said.

The next editor of the Dispatch will be adept at managing both the print and online products in a two-newspaper town, Martens said.

Though the Dispatch has faced many changes in the last year — including the current change in leadership — Martens is confident the paper has a strong future in York.

"The Dispatch has always been a vital part of the newspaper franchise in York. Whether it's print or digital, the Dispatch audience represents a very significant part of the total audience, and I'm in it for the long haul," he said.
