The Pennsylvania Superior Court last week denied a request from former state Rep. Steve Stetler to hear additional arguments on the appeal of his public- corruption conviction.

Stetler's Harrisburg-based attorney, Barbara Zemlock, filed a motion June 17 asking the appeals court to hear re- argument.

The motion was in response to the Superior Court's June 3 ruling denying Stetler's bid for appeal.

Last week, the Superior Court denied the motion to hear reargument, according to online court records.

In September 2012, Stetler was sentenced to 1-1/2 to five years in county prison and ordered to pay $35,000 in fines and $466,621.45 in restitution, plus court costs. A jury in June 2012 found him guilty of conflict of interest, criminal conspiracy and four counts of theft.

He was released after serving his prison sentence and remains on probation.

The conviction: Stetler was convicted of misusing public funds and state employees for legislative campaigns while he was chairman of the House Democratic Campaign Committee from 2002 to 2006. At the same time, he also chaired the House Democratic Caucus's policy committee.

Stetler, 65, has maintained his innocence. He was one of a number of legislators and aides charged and convicted as part of the state's Bonusgate investigation.

He directed some staffers to do campaign work on their legislative time, with taxpayers footing the bill, presiding Dauphin County Judge Todd A. Hoover noted at Stetler's sentencing hearing.

Less 'complicit': But Hoover said Stetler differed from other Bonusgate criminal defendants in one respect — most of them acted in their own best interests, he said.

Stetler "didn't do this for ... personal gain" and instead was trying to do good work for citizens, Hoover said.

The judge also said Stetler "is not as culpable or complicit as others."

The Superior Court's June 3 ruling denying Stetler's bid for appeal cites Hoover's "thorough" examination of the legal issues Zemlock raised.

Zemlock did not return a phone message seeking comment.
