A York Township bar and restaurant has dropped the sports bar moniker and jumped on the craft beer trend.

Stone Grille & Taphouse, formerly Tailgaters Grille & Drafthouse, reopened for business Tuesday at its same 204 St. Charles Way location with a focus on craft beer and fresh food, a combination one of its owners said is hard to come by in York County.

"We're heading in the direction of craft beer. The craft beer scene has grown by leaps and bounds, and we wanted to be part of it," said Danette Small-Shultz, who owns the bar and restaurant with her husband, Dave.

Renovations: Tailgaters officially closed about a week ago for the final stages of renovations that included combining the bar and restaurant sections to form one large area that is non-smoking.

Other renovations included adding more taps to keep thirsty patrons in supply of brews, Small-Shultz said.

The bar upped its tap count from 12 to 30, and beers pulled from most of the taps will be rotated as each keg of craft beer runs dry. A new staple at the bar is Stone Grille Lager, which is brewed specifically for the bar by a company in Lancaster, she said.

For the less adventurous, the bar will still serve up big name beers like Miller Lite and Coors Light, as well as wine and spirits.

The bar got into the craft beer business about a year ago when it opened Brew Ta Go, a selection of more than 200 beers that are sold to go.


Food: With a number of bars turning to the world of craft beers, not many have put a huge focus on food, Small-Shultz said, adding, "We want to fill the craft beer and food niche."

Chef Jason Walters took the approach of farm to table in creating a menu that includes artisan wood stone oven pizza, sandwiches, entrees and more. Even the mozzarella cheese is made in-house, Small-Shultz said.

"Nothing's frozen. Everything's fresh," she said. "As much as we can get locally we do."
