York City firefighters rescued a 9-year-old boy who was locked in a safe at a store on Saturday.
The boy crawled into the gun safe on display at Tractor Supply Co., 901 Loucks Road, and his sister shut the door, locking him in, said Chief David Michaels.
First responders were dispatched to the store about 5:50 p.m., he said.
The boy, who appeared to be unfazed by the ordeal, talked to firefighters through the locked door.
Part of the locking mechanism had been removed and once firefighters reattached it, they were able to open the door and free the trapped boy, Michaels said.
"It was definitely the safest way to get him out," he said.
Firefighters had tools on hand to cut open the safe if needed, the chief added.
Michaels said a store employee promptly called 911 after learning the boy was trapped and firefighters had him out within 10 minutes.
Though an ambulance was dispatched, the boy did not require medical treatment.
