Former Central York High School standout Tre Bowman has been removed from the Penn State men's basketball roster, according to Penn State sports information official Brian Siegrist.

However, Bowman's removal from the roster may only be a temporary measure, Siegrist said.

"He will not be here this summer but we are expecting him to be back in the fall and he will have a chance to earn his way back on the roster this fall," Siegrist said.

Bowman's removal from the roster came after he met recently with new head coach Patrick Chambers.

"(Bowman) and coach (Chambers) have talked and set some objectives out for (Bowman) to achieve and the coaching staff will evaluate his progress this fall," Siegrist said.

Siegrist did not specify why Bowman, who will be entering his sophomore season at Penn State, has been removed from the roster.

Bowman was cited for summary-level disorderly conduct for engaging in fighting behavior for his part in an altercation on Feb. 26, which also involved former Penn State guard Taran Buie, who was dismissed from the team in the spring after being suspended indefinitely by former head coach Ed DeChellis in December.

Penn State football players Curtis Drake and Derrick Thomas were also involved in the incident.

Bowman is still academically eligible, Siegrist said.

Bowman's removal from the roster comes in the same week that Chambers got a verbal commitment from a player similar to Bowman in wing guard Akosa Maduegbunam. The 6-foot, 3-inch Maduegbunam, a Charlestown, Mass., native, has 3-point range and was recruited by Chambers while at Boston University, where Chambers last coached.

Bowman, a 6-foot, 4-inch guard, played in 16 games for the Nittany Lions this past season, averaging 0.8 points, 1.0 assists and 4.0 minutes a game. He did not play in any of the team's five postseason games, including four in the Big Ten tournament and the NCAA tournament loss to Temple.

When reached by phone Thursday evening, Bowman said he was unaware of his removal from the roster.

Siegrist, though, said Bowman has met with Chambers and is aware of his current status with the team.
