Two Northeastern High School students earned recognition in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Peter Snell, son of Vanessa Snell, was named a commended student, and Tamara Klinger, daughter of Troy and Penny Leader, is advancing in the competition as a semifinalist.

District Superintendent Judy Nace announced the honors at a recent school board meeting.

About 1.5 million U.S. high school students took the PSAT exam in October 2011. Commended students are those who finished in the top 5 percent.

As a semifinalists, Klinger is still in the running for a national merit scholarship.
