Girls on the Run York is inviting those interested in coaching opportunities to join the Girls on the Run team. All necessary training and coaching materials will be provided. You do not have to be a runner to be a coach.

The program will be launching its sixth spring season beginning the week of Jan. 30. Training for new coaches will be provided at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the YWCA York, 320 E. Market St., York.

Girls on the Run of York, part of Girls on the Run International and an affiliate program of the YWCA York, is a nonprofit, character development program for girls grades 3-8. The program meets after school two days per week, and combines the healthy venue of running with an interactive 24-lesson curriculum designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.

At the end of the season, the girls choose and conduct a community project and complete a 5K together as a group.

Though a 5K is part of the curriculum, this is NOT a running program. Girls are encouraged to walk, skip, hop, jump or run their way to a healthy body.

To begin a new site or become a coach, contact program coordinator Julie Shilke at or (717) 434-1748. For more information about the Girls on the Run York Spring 2013 season and volunteer opportunities, visit
