A bail bondsman was allegedly choked by a York County prisoner on Sunday.

Steven Schiding, 64, was meeting with Manchester resident Andrew Walk, 20, who was facing charges from Newberry Township Police of theft by unlawful taking and underage drinking. Police said Walk was stealing property from neighbors' sheds, and he left footprints in the snow that led police to him.

Schiding was discussing Walk's $2,500 bail Sunday afternoon, according to state police, when Walk became upset and accused Schiding of trying to profit from Walk's imprisonment. Schiding ended the conversation and escorted Walk back to his holding cell, police said, when Walk grabbed Schiding from behind and put him in a choke hold.

Corrections officers helped break up the struggle, police said. No injuries were reported.

Walk was then charged with simple assault and harassment and placed on $50,000 bail, which he has since met, according to York County Prison officials.
