A shoplifter caught pushing a cart full of groceries out of an East Manchester Township supermarket Thursday morning didn't abandon his haul when confronted by store security, police said.

Instead, Chad David Ryan pulled a gun on the loss-prevention officers, turning a retail theft into a robbery, according to Northeastern Regional Police Chief Bryan Rizzo.

Store security saw Ryan pushing the cart full of food and soda out of Giant Food Store, 205 Glen Drive, at 10:45 a.m., Rizzo said.

"He looked suspicious to loss-prevention officers, who confronted him and asked him for a receipt," the chief said. "He admitted stealing the items. They tried to stop him from leaving and he pulled a gun on them."

At that point, Ryan fled the parking lot in his GMC Sierra -- but first he loaded the cart full of groceries into his SUV, according to Rizzo.

A witness was able to get the SUV's license-plate number, which is how officers identified Ryan, of Creek Road in Newberry Township, the chief said.

Newberry Township Police went to Ryan's home, where he surrendered without incident, Rizzo said.

Ryan, 39, faces charges including robbery, theft and receiving stolen property, the chief said.
