Did you run over or see a pothole while driving? The state Department of Transportation wants to know about it.

PennDOT is asking motorists to call its hotline at 1-800-FIX-ROAD (1-800-349-7623) to report potholes and other road maintenance concerns.

The recent wet weather, coupled with temperature fluctuations above and below the freezing point, created prime conditions for potholes to form, PennDOT said.

Potholes develop when water seeps below the road through small cracks in the pavement. As the water freezes and thaws, a cavity below the road forms and larger cracks develop, which destroy the strength of the pavement.

Callers can use the hotline to report any state roadway maintenance concerns such as potholes, roadway washouts, missing highway signs, high shoulder drop-offs or deer removal, PennDOT said.

The hotline shouldn't be used to report traffic crashes, disabled vehicles, or other emergencies. Motorists should call 911 to report those types of incidents.
