Springettsbury Township Manager John Holman told the board of supervisors several contractors have picked up documents to bid on the Springettsbury Township fire building.

Bids are due April 18, and are divided into three categories; general construction contractors; plumbing/fire suppression and HVAC construction contractors; and electrical construction contractors.

Eight contractors have picked up for general construction, four for plumbing and HVAC, and three for electrical. After the bids are submitted, the board will open them and select the low bidder.

The soon-to-be-built fire station on Commons Drive will serve as the headquarters of York Area United Fire and Rescue, currently located at 3321 Whiteford Road.

The two-story station will include the usual bunkrooms, lockerrooms, kitchen and day room found in most fire stations.

It will also feature four drive-through bays for apparatus, a fitness room and a multi-purpose room, according to the plans.

The upper floor is where the department's headquarters will be located, and offices for the volunteer association will be on the first floor, along with the living quarters and amenities for firefighters.

Ambulance service will also be housed in the new station.

With an estimated cost of $4.2 million, it is expected to be complete sometime next year.
