A West York man accused of attempting to lure to children into his van with the promise of candy had a mattress and latex gloves in the van at the time of his arrest, police said.

Julio Flores Jr., 43, of the 1100 block of West King Street is charged with luring a child into a motor vehicle. He is also charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia after York County Sheriff's deputies found marijuana and a scale on Flores after he was taken to central booking.

Bail for Flores was set at $100,000 during his weekend arraignment. He remained in York County Prison Monday morning.

Luring: Two juveniles told officers about 7:15 p.m. Saturday that a man, later identified as Flores, approached them while they were in front of Slagle Park in the 1300 block of West Poplar Street and asked if they were still in school, according to Flores' charging documents.

Flores then allegedly asked the children if they wanted candy, but they declined, telling officers they did so because they were scared that they might be lured into the van. The children left the area to tell an adult, and the van was last seen driving toward South Highland Avenue, documents state.

The children described the man as a heavy-set Hispanic man with a slight

beard who was wearing a New York Yankees hat with sunglasses on the brim and a blue jacket or shirt, documents say.

Found: The officers put out a description of the van and the man over the police radio but located the van parked on West King Street at 7:51 p.m. A neighbor told officers the man who got out of the van went to a nearby apartment, where officers found Flores, who matched the description given by the children, documents state.

Flores told officers that he had been at his house for more than an hour, but when officers told him about the luring report, Flores said he asked the children if they go to school, documents state.

One of the officers asked Flores if they could look inside the van, to which Flores answered, "You can look all you want," documents state.

Officers found a mattress in the back of the van, which had curtains on the rear and rear-side windows, and a pair of latex gloves and lollipops in the glove box. Officers also found a container of candy between the front seats, documents state.

One of the children and his mother were summoned to the scene by police to identify Flores. The boy was "visibly shaken and appeared scared" when he saw Flores, documents state.
