People can show their stand against racism by walking or running this weekend in York City.

The YWCA will start its annual 5K Race Against Racism at 9 a.m. Saturday at its facility at 320 E. Market St.

"The race will go through the streets of downtown York," said Cathy Haynes, the YWCA's fund development associate. "Streets will be closed, and we'll have signs and people guiding (participants) along the route."

She said that more than 800 people are expected to either run, walk or do a little bit of both in the race, which will conclude at the YW.

"(The race) is a great way to physically show that you personally are against racism," she said. "You can get out in the street and say, 'Racism is not something I tolerate.'"

About 700 people participated last year, according to Haynes.

Something new: "We're getting more participants, and more people become aware of it," she said. "And the increase also may be because this year, we started something new."

Businesses, schools or organizations with a team of 25 or more participants qualify for a free one-hour racial justice training session, Haynes said.

Proceeds from the race - participants pay entrance fees - will be used to support the YWCA's racial justice efforts, including providing educational programs designed for schools and businesses, she said.

This year's race includes youth from the YWCA's countywide Girls on the Run program, designed to help pre-teen girls boost their confidence through running activities, Haynes said.

"This race is a big event for people to get up and be part of the community and show their stance against racism," she said.
