Spring is finally in bloom. The weather's warming up, winter jackets are shoved into closets, and the YMCA wants kids to play outside.

On Saturday, York County's YMCA branches are celebrating Healthy Kids Day with a free community event that encourages families to get moving and play together.

More than 1,900 Ys across the country are taking part in the national initiative by holding community events.

York's four branches each participate in the annual event, said Matt Doran, the Southern branch's youth and family director.

"We want this event to allow families to come together and enjoy a day together at the Y," he said.

And getting active is a big part of the event too, said Cori Strathmeyer, wellness director of the York branch.

"The perception of exercise is a negative one," she said. "Physical activity doesn't have to be a chore."

Membership at the YMCA is priced according to members' income. And on Healthy Kids Day, the branches are all waiving the membership joining fee -- that's a savings of up to $75, said Beth Crone, membership director of the Dover branch.

Non-members are welcome to participate in the day's free events. All ages are welcome to attend.
