The American Red Cross has issued an emergency call for blood and platelet donors.

And the organization's York-Adams Chapter hopes local residents will respond to the call, said Matt Leininger, the chapter's executive director.

National donations were down about 10 percent in June, according to the organization's national headquarters in Washington, D.C. There were 50,000 fewer donors than expected, the American Red Cross said in its news release. There was a similar shortfall this time last year, according the organization.

"With the 10 percent (decrease), we're tracking parallel with the national trend, which is not positive," said Leininger. "We've always been stronger than some areas around the nation. York is very generous that way, but our (blood donations) are low now."

Leininger said blood donations tend to go down during the summer as potential donors go on vacations.

Some would-be donors hold off on giving blood because of inclement weather conditions, while others' focus shifts from giving blood to donating money to help those affected by natural disasters, Leininger said.

"And we have people who set up (blood donation) appointments, but they don't follow through, not to say that it's not for legitimate reasons, but we don't get the donation," he said.

Leininger said the public can schedule blood donations at the local Red Cross offices at 724 S. George St. in York City and at 529 Carlisle St. in Hanover.

"We also collect blood offsite at a variety of donations," he said. "People can host or sponsor a blood drive in a place of business and house of worship."

People who tend to donate blood do so once a year, Leininger said.

"If everyone donated twice a year, we would almost never have to put an appeal out for more donations," he said.
