A Fawn Township man allegedly beat and choked his wife and then stabbed himself with a knife Tuesday night, police say.

Anthony William Sproul, 34, of the 400 block of Deer Road is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment, according to his charging documents.

He remains in York County Prison on $60,000 bail.

His wife, Amy Sproul, remains in Hershey Medical Center, where she is listed as being in fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

What happened: State police troopers were sent to the Sprouls' house a little after 8 p.m. for a reported domestic dispute.

The Sprouls' children ran to a neighbor's home for help after they heard Anthony Sproul accuse his wife of cheating on him and then threatened to kill her, documents state.

The children told the neighbor they saw Anthony Sproul choke Amy Sproul until she lost consciousness, documents state.

When a trooper arrived on the scene, Anthony Sproul stumbled toward the trooper and "collapsed with apparent stab wounds to his chest," documents state.

A second trooper found Amy Sproul inside the home. Her "face was severely beaten and she was disoriented," documents state.

Amy Sproul told troopers that Anthony Sproul choked her, pushed her down a flight of stairs and repeatedly beat her, documents state.

She also told troopers that Anthony Sproul stabbed himself with a knife, which troopers found with blood on its tip in the house, documents state.

Amy Sproul was flown to Hershey Medical Center. Anthony Sproul was taken to York Hospital before he was taken to central booking, where he was arraigned Wednesday.
