Newberry Township Police have arrested a man they say broke into at least 50 vehicles and stole items.

Curtis Schoppert, 23, of the 2300 block of Grandview Drive in the township is charged with three counts of theft from a motor vehicle and a single count each of possession of paraphernalia, loitering and prowling at night, public drunkenness and possession of marijuana, according to police.

He remains in York County Prison on $5,000 bail, a prison spokesman said.

Schoppert was arrested about 4:30 a.m. Sunday after a foot chase with an officer.

The officer spotted a pickup truck with its interior light on and a door open parked near a driveway on Valley Green Road. A man, later identified as Schoppert, ran from the area and the officer gave chase, police said.

Schoppert admitted to police that he stole items from at least 50 vehicles in the area, police said.

Despite the arrest, police are reminding residents to lock their vehicles, even when parked in driveways. Criminals typically target unlocked vehicles in these types of incidents.
