A two-alarm fire destroyed a barn filled with hay in Paradise Township Wednesday.

Firefighters from York and Adams counties were dispatched to the barn along Big Mount Road near West Canal Road about 6:30 p.m., and arriving crews quickly struck a second alarm.

"We arrived with heavy fire," said Capt. Cory Lease of the East Berlin Fire Co.

No animals or equipment were inside the barn. But hay inside it fed the fire, sending flames and a plume of smoke into the air.

Crews sprayed water onto the blaze from outside the barn, part of which collapsed. An earthmoving machine was brought in to help firefighters search for hotspots.

At least 15 fire companies responded to the fire, and tankers shuttled in water from a creek.

A damage estimate was not known Wednesday night, nor was the cause of the fire. A state police fire marshal is expected to investigate, Lease said.
