An alleged shoplifter badly hurt when she was struck by a vehicle on Route 30 while fleeing officers is being charged with retail theft, police said.

Selena Harris, 38, of the 500 block of McKenzie Street in York City, already had a retail-theft charge lodged against her when the incident happened, court records reveal.

She will be charged with misdemeanor retail theft, according to West Manchester Township Detective Sgt. Jeff Snell.

Harris tried to steal $189 worth of merchandise from Walmart in the West Manchester Mall the night of Oct. 8, he said.

Snell said it's believed Harris' boyfriend also was at Walmart that night, sitting in a pickup truck. But he left the area around the time Harris was being confronted by authorities, the detective said.

According to Snell, Harris was confronted by Walmart store security as she tried to leave the store with a cart full of goods.

She fled from them, abandoning the cart in the process, he said. Security then called police.

Struck: A West Manchester Township officer spotted Harris walking along Route 30 and started to approach her, at which point she ran onto the highway and was hit by a vehicle about 8:30 p.m., according to Trooper Rob Hicks, a state police spokesman.

Another officer in a police cruiser who had been helping in the search positioned the cruiser in front of Harris to keep her from being struck again until traffic could be stopped, Hicks said.

Both officers performed CPR on Harris until an ambulance arrived and took her to York Hospital, he said.

State police were asked to investigate the circumstances of how Harris was struck. On Wednesday, troopers said that investigation is ongoing.

Harris' condition could not be obtained from York Hospital on Wednesday morning. Police said she suffered serious injuries.

She has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Nov. 7 on an unrelated misdemeanor retail theft charge that was filed by Springettsbury Township Police in September, according to court records.
