NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The York College women's lacrosse team picked up a 15-10 victory at Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon in their regular-season finale.
The Spartans improve to 13-3 with the win while they also improve to 6-1 in the CAC. The Captains fall to 9-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
York tallied the first goal as Erica Mulford found the back of the net for an unassisted goal at the 25:53 mark. The Captains then ripped off three straight goals in a seven minute stretch to seize a 3-1 lead.
York wasted little time in answering their hosts as the Spartans snapped off eight straight goals over the remaining 14:27 of the first half. Mulford scored four of the eight goals as the Spartans took a 9-3 lead to the break.
The Spartans pushed the lead to 11-3 in the first minute and a half of the second half as Kerri Nicolich and Brittany Noell scored off passes from Megan Stine. The Captains' Jessica Singer halted the Spartan 10-goal spurt with an unassisted tally but Noell and Mulford notched back-to-back goals to take a 13-4 lead.
CNU scored three goals over the next eight minutes to trim York's lead to 13-7. York got goals from Nicolich and Noell as the Spartan lead stood at 15-7 with 6:04 left in regulation. The Captains scored the final three goals of the game including a tally with just 13 seconds left to provide for York's final five-goal margin of victory.
Mulford had a big day as the senior tied her career-high with six goals. Mulford did her damage on just seven shots. Noell continues her late season surge as she had four goals on five shots while Sarah Castle contributed four points on two goals and two assists. Stine dished out three assists while Nicolich and Melissa Ritchey each notched three points. Nicolich scored a pair of goals with an assist while Ritchey had one goal and two helpers. Central York High School graduate Jocelyn Hudson garnered five draw controls to lead York while senior Jess Soroka had two draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Meaghan Galvin led the Captains with five points on four goals and an assist. Ashton Marshall added three points on two goals and an assist. Kyle Chaplin contributed two goals while Erin Callahan and Jessica Singer each had a goal and an assist. The Captains had just five players reach the scoring column for the game. Emily Johnson led the Captain defense with four caused turnovers and six ground balls.
The Captains outshot the Spartans 28-27 while the Green and White held a 20-19 margin in ground balls. CNU won 16 of the 27 draw controls while both teams were loose with the ball as CNU had 22 turnovers to 19 for York.
Ashley Smith earned the win in net as she played the first 55:51 of the game. Smith made six saves and allowed seven goals in her time in cage.
Hanna Slough went the distance in goal for the Captains as she allowed all 15 Spartan goals. Slough notched seven saves for CNU.
The Spartans now advance to the Capital Athletic Conference tournament where they will receive a first-round bye as the second seed. York will host a semifinal game next Saturday in York.
