Thumbs up: A great local program recently got a little better.

For 12 years now, the York County Area Agency on Aging has partnered with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to offer the program to give eligible seniors $20 in vouchers for fruits and vegetables from participating local farm markets.

This year, the agency expanded the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program to include three additional voucher pickup sites for seniors.

York County residents who are 60 or older, and who have a 2013 total gross annual household income at or below $21,257 for a single person or $28,694 for a couple, are eligible to participate. Residents of nursing homes or any residential setting that offers meals are not eligible for the program.

The vouchers can only be used to purchase produce grown in Pennsylvania and can be redeemed until Nov. 30.

The players earned that right the hard way.

The team lost five games in the regular season, then an 18-1 thumping by Hanover in the final of the York-Adams Tournament and 12-2 loss to Hampden on the second day of the double-elimination

The players come back through the losers' bracket of the Region 4 championship, winning four games in a row, including a doubleheader on Wednesday, the final day of the event.

They became the first Spring Grove team to win the region title.


Spring Grove takes on Blackhawk, the Region 6 champion, at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in Boyertown in the eight-team state tournament, which also features a double-elimination format.

Thumbs up: West Yorker Jon Scallion handled the heat admirably during this season's "Hell's Kitchen" television show, outlasting 17 other contestants vying for the show's grand prize.

Still, the 29-year-old had to leave the kitchen after he was eliminated on the season finale last week.

"It sucks not to be in the final pairing, but it was a hell of a ride," Scallion said.

Scallion's run on the cooking show -- on which celebrity master chef Gordon Ramsay uses a sharp tongue to critique the cooking abilities of contestants -- began in February 2012 when he made it through an open casting call in Philadelphia.

"The whole experience has given me more confidence in the way I present myself in and out of the kitchen," he said in an interview with The York Dispatch.

While determining who would move on to the final challenge, Ramsay recognized Scallion as one of the show's strongest contestants.

"Never before in the history of 'Hell's Kitchen' have I had a more difficult time deciding the final two," he said.
