The York Expo Center is going to the dogs.

At least 250 dogs and their owners are expected to compete in the Keystone DockDogs Spring Splash Festival to be held 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the York Expo Center.

"It's a fun event, where dogs get to chase the toys, play in the water, jump, all the things dogs enjoy doing," said Valerie Moore, a New Oxford resident and treasurer with Keystone DockDogs Club.

The festival is presented by Keystone DockDogs Club, which includes members from around the state, including York County.

While the club holds several dog-related events, this is the first time it is hosting a Spring Splash Festival, and York is the best place to start, said event manager Rob Moore, also Valerie Moore's husband.

"We've been trying to get an event in York for a long time," he said. "We have a lot of club members in this area."

The competition: The festival, for dogs of all breeds and sizes, features four aquatic competition events. They include Outdoor Big Air for long jump, Extreme Vertical for high jump and Speed Retrieve for testing canine quickness.

Owners can choose which events their dogs can compete in, or they can sign up for the Iron Dog competition in which their dogs complete in all the events, Rob Moore said.

The Moores said they have two dogs that will be competing in the event. They are Tiny, a 5-year-old male Newfoundland, and Leah, a 3-year-old female Belgian Malinois. The dogs have competed in several aquatic competitions.

"(The festival) is a very athletic event," Rob Moore said. "Spectators get an adrenaline rush seeing the competition. They get excited and cheer for the dogs."
