Drawing divers youth together

I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to the following organizations for their participation in making a truly exceptional Three Kings Day celebration on Saturday, Jan. 11: The Latin American Culture Club, Hispanic Coalition, Centro Hispano, the York City School District, Marine Corps Toys for Tots and Mayor Kim Bracey. All contributed to the donation of over 600 gifts given out to our community youth.

This event celebrates the "El Dia de los Reyes Magos," or celebration of the Epiphany, which is the day when the Kings of Magi went to the baby Jesus bearing gifts. It is celebrated on Jan. 6 in many countries and cultures, but in many Hispanic countries in particular, it involves giving gifts to children.

This ecumenical holiday is important to the Christian faith. Our community youth are representative of diverse backgrounds and faith. This event brought many together to celebrate the successes of our youth over the past year and provided an opportunity to positively interact as we look ahead to 2014.

I am proud to partake in such an event and to engage with our growing Hispanic population. Thank you again to all of the organizations and the many individuals represented by each. A special thank you to Dave Brady as his Toys for Tots LCO donation made up the vast majority of toys that were donated.

Feliz Ano Nuevo, Happy New Year to all.
