Shelley Metzler wants to help pet owners learn how to care for the animals they love.

That will be the focus of the first BARk seminar which will be held 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at West York Fire Co., 1341 W. Market St.

Metzler is the founder of BARk, or Borough Animal Response krew, a nonprofit organization that provides emergency services, food and supplies to animals and their owners. The organization also helps find lost or stray animals and does rescues.

"The purpose of this seminar is to educate the public about what we do and how we help the borough, the residents and their pets," she said. "We're volunteers. There are nine of us and we do this for free."

The seminar is free and will provide information on animal care and safety.

The Central Pennsylvania Animal Alliance from Mechanicsburg will run a microchip and vaccine clinic throughout the event. The cost is $25 for microchipping and $10 for each type of vaccine, said Metzler, also the borough's animal control officer.

Collection: BARk also will collect donations of animal supplies, including leashes, collars, litter and food, said Metzler, who started the organization in 2008.

The donations will be used for the BARk's Needy Pet Drive, which freely distributes animal supplies to pets of those in need during the holiday season. The organization served 83 pets last year, Metzler said.

The organization also will collect donations at its fifth annual yard sale festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at Shelly Park, along Highland Avenue in West York.

The public can help stuff "Cletus," the borough's police van, with the animal supplies, said Metzler, also a borough councilwoman.

Information about BARk will be shared at the event, she said.

People also can make money for themselves by selling their own items during the yard sale, she said.

"We want people to learn about caring for animals and some have fun," Metzler said. "There are a lot of people expressing interest in what we're doing. We hope they show up at our seminar and the yard sale."
