Benefit meals

Fashion show

Tickets are available for the York Twinning Association's 20th anniversary Fall Luncheon & Fashion Show.

The event will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Country Club of York. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., and lunch will be served at noon.


Tickets are $35 per person and are available from any Twinning member or by calling Ardy Gable at 741-1479 or Mary Homsher at 846-1624 by Saturday.

Collage and My Sister's Closet will present fashions. Member Lori Rene, of Mary Kay Skincare & Cosmetics, will provide makeup for various individuals to model. Sponsor a table of eight and have your name entered into a drawing for a $100 gift certificate.

The event benefits the activities of the York Twinning Association, an independent organization of citizens in the greater York area in support of educational and cultural exchanges with the cities of Arles, France (since 1954) and Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany (since 1981). Season opener

The White Rose Polka Dancers will open their season with the Shoreliners Orchestra, 7-11 p.m. Saturday at the Alert Fire Co. in Emigsville.

Book reading and signing

Children's author Jessica Dimuzio and her canine co-author, Johnny Angel, will be doing a book reading and signing at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Paul Smith Library of Southern York County.

Johnny Angel, a 5-pound Papillon puppy, and his best friend, veterinarian Dr. Jessica Dimuzio, recount the struggle to save their beloved Norristown park in the newly published children's picture book "Bark! Bark! Bark for My Park!"

Alumni 5K and SpartaKids Fun Run

The York College Alumni Association will hold its inaugural 5K Run/Walk and SpartaKids Fun Run on Saturday. The event is sponsored by Northwestern Mutual and open to the public.

Registration for the 5K will be held from 7 to 8:15 a.m. at the Grumbacher Sport and Fitness Center's concession area. The race will start at 8:30 a.m.

Registration for the Spartakids Fun Run, for children 12 and under, will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m., with the run beginning at 9:10 a.m.

Entry fees are $25 for York College alumni, employees and community members, and includes a T-shirt, gift bag and breakfast after the race. The SpartaKids Fun Run is free.

A portion of the money raised will help support the York College Fund, which helps to offset campus costs and provides financial aid for 90 percent of students.

Fall festivals

---Shrewsbury Fall Fest will be held 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday in the Village of Shrewsbury. The free event will feature a number of merchants, entertainment and a newly added Soup Contest as well as fall-inspired arts, crafts, live entertainment, foods and refreshments and demonstrations. ---The Wild West Fall Fest will be held 3-7 p.m. Saturday at Christ's American Baptist Church, 730 Menges Mills Road, Spring Grove. This is a free event that will feature food, children's games and prizes, animals, small barrel tractor rides, car show, music, puppet shows, bounce house and a hymn sing. ---The Harvest Fest will be held Sunday at Bible Baptist Church, 4190 N. Susquehanna Trail in York. October meeting

The South Central PA Genealogical Society will hold its October meeting at 2:15 p.m. Sunday in the Meeting Hall of the York County Heritage Trust, 250 E. Market St., York.

This month's program will feature local historian and columnist June Lloyd, whose topic will be "Mapping the Susquehanna."

The business portion of the meeting begins at 2:15 p.m. and the program begins at about 2:30 p.m. Meetings are free and open to the public.



New Sunday service

The Church of the Open Door will be holding a new Sunday morning service, called The Gathering, on Sunday.

The service will start at 11:11 a.m. in the Family Life Center. It will feature live worship and the pastor's pre-recorded message, which will be shown on a giant screen. This service will have coffee and cookies as well as a more interactive worship.

The church is located at 8 Carlisle Court in West Manchester Township.


Animal Adventures photography

The York County Department of Parks and Recreation will present Animal Adventures, a fun photography program, 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Richard M. Nixon County Park.

Wildlife photographer Carol Figdore will share her photographs of animal encounters, many of which are on exhibit in the nature center.

Blessing of the animals

Heidelberg United Church of Christ, 47 W. Philadelphia St., will hold a Blessing of the Animals at 3 p.m. Sunday. The service will take place at the rear of the church on the lawn.

Kidz Club

The Pleasureville United Methodist Church will be hosting a Kidz Club from 2 to 4 p.m. on the first and third Sundays of each month, beginning Sunday.

The club will encourage children to make a difference in their community through fun outreach projects that benefit those in need. Crafts and snacks will be provided at each meeting.

Attendance is free, and all children in grades K through 6 are invited to attend. The Pleasureville United Methodist Church located at 2606 N. Sherman St. in York.
