TOWANDA, Pa.—An elderly man has been ruled competent to stand trial in the shooting deaths of a northern Pennsylvania couple more than six years ago.

The (Towanda) Daily Review ( says Monday's ruling in Bradford County denied a motion by attorneys for 75-year-old John DeSisti.

DeSisti is charged with murder and burglary in the November 2006 shotgun slayings of his cousin, Carol Keeffe, and her husband, David Keeffe, a prominent attorney in Sayre.

Defense witnesses testified in a hearing last fall that DeSisti has moderate dementia, but prosecutors suggested that he might be faking his symptoms.

President Judge Jeffrey Smith said the defendant appears to have some degree of dementia, but the defense hadn't shown that he couldn't understand the proceedings or would be unable to consult with his attorneys.
