HARRISBURG, Pa.—People who conceal the death of a child would face harsher penalties under a bill under consideration in the Pennsylvania Legislature.

The state House voted unanimously on Tuesday to turn what's been a misdemeanor into a felony offense.

The proposal also applies the law to a wider group, including those living in the same household as the child and anyone responsible for the child's welfare.

It also clarifies the definition of parent to include stepparents, adoptive parents, guardians and the intimate partners of natural parents.

The measure is now pending in the state Senate.
