York City detectives on Monday afternoon had not yet determined why someone fatally shot a Lancaster County man whose body was found hours after he died on a city sidewalk.

"We're out interviewing people now," said Detective First Class Jeff Spence, who is supervising the investigation.

Hezekiah Walker's killer and the motive for the shooting are not yet known, Spence said. But he noted detectives have some information to follow.

"We know which direction we're going," he said without elaborating.

Spence said detectives have been told that Walker was living in Columbia and came to York two days ago to visit family.

"We're still trying to figure out what he was doing in the area," York City Police Chief Wes Kahley said, and urged people with information to come forward.

Walker, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting in the 300 block of West King Street, according to city detectives.

Police and emergency crews were called there at 5:57 a.m., city Sgt. John Veater said.

York County Chief Deputy Coroner Claude Stabley said an autopsy on Walker's body is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Allentown's Lehigh Valley Hospital.

"There were reports that neighbors heard gunfire sometime during the night, and (Walker) was found this morning just before 6 a.m.," Stabley said.

No one in the neighborhood called police to report gunshots, so it's not clear exactly what time the shooting occurred, according to Stabley.

"It was somewhere around 2:40 in the morning, give or take," he said.

The condition of Walker's body does not contradict that time frame, Stabley said.

A person walking through the block this morning, headed to the bus transfer station, spotted the body and called 911, he said.

In addition to his Columbia address, Walker also had a listed address in North York, according to Stabley.
