Give credit to Milner Sosa for not sugarcoating it.

The longtime York Catholic boys' soccer coach openly admits this season is a rebuilding year.

"We knew we were gonna be a young team," Sosa said Tuesday afternoon. "We don't even have a JV (junior varsity team). We only have 17 guys."

Junior goalie Luca Grippi is the only returning starter from last year's Irish club that won the York-Adams Division III title ahead of Biglerville and reached the District 3-A quarterfinals, where it lost to Biglerville, 2-0.

York Catholic's young roster and lack of depth was evident Tuesday, when the visiting Canners won, 7-1.

"This is the worst loss I can remember," Sosa said. "But Biglerville has a strong team. They deserve it. We have a lot of work to do. In two years we'll be strong."

Zachary Ingram scored the lone goal for the Irish less than seven minutes into the game to give York Catholic (2-1 league, 2-3 overall) its only lead, 1-0.

It took Biglerville (3-0, 5-1) about 15 minutes to finally wake up, coach Jebb Nelson said. And the Canners couldn't be stopped once they got everything going. They lived up to the high expectations for a team that returns all but two starters after last year finishing as the district runner-up and reaching the state semifinals. Nelson, a 1998 Biglerville grad in his fourth year as the Canners' coach, believes his team has the talent to make a run to the state title game.

"I think if our guys continue to work and improve, that's definitely something that could happen," he said. "Sometimes there's definitely luck on some of those close games where unpredictable things can happen."

Biglerville outshot York Catholic, 14-4, and had an 8-2 edge in corners. Senior Paulino Rico led the Canners with two scores to go along with an assist.

Grippi made seven saves for York Catholic.
