LAS VEGAS - David Taylor and Zain Retherford placed second and Ed Ruth took third to lead 11 current and former Penn State wrestlers at the 2014 Vegas ASICS/U.S. Open and FILA Junior Nationals over the weekend.

Taylor led the Penn State contingent in the U.S. Open. He went 3-1 at 74 kilograms, losing a 7-6 decision to reigning Olympic champion Jordan Burroughs in the title match.

Ruth went 5-1 at 86 kilograms, losing 13-12 to Clayton Foster.

Matt Brown (3-2 at 86kg), James Vollrath (2-2 at 70 kg), Zack Beitz (1-2 at 65 kg), Kade Moss (1-2 at 65 kg) and Jordan Conaway (1-2 at 57 kg) were other members from last season's NCAA title team to compete. Conaway is a New Oxford High School graduate.

Former Penn State wrestler Quentin Wright went 5-2 to place seventh at 86kg. Frank Molinaro also went 5-2 and took fourth at 65kg. Mark McNight went 2-2 at 57 kg. Nittany Lion Wrestling Club member Jake Varner, the reigning Olympic champ, went 4-0 to win at 97kg.

Retherford led the Penn State contingent at the Junior Nationals. He went 5-1, falling in the 66kg finals to Aaron Pico. Garrett Hammond (6-3 at 73kg) and Cody Law (5-3 at 70 kg) each placed eighth. Matt McCutcheon went 3-2 at 84 kg.
