An awards show celebrating high school musical theater is being revamped with a new name and new venue.

For eight years it was held at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center and called the Rosies.

This year, the name is changing to Encore and the event will be held at Central York High School.

During the summer, a group of musical directors met and decided not to participate in the Rosies, claiming the event outgrew the York City venue.

The Rosies grew from just a couple of schools participating to nearly every local high school being involved, said Lyn Bergdoll, co-chair of Encore, a member of the Strand's board of directors and executive director at York Little Theatre.

Those participating in the Rosies included about 600 students from 14 York County high schools: Central York, Dallastown, Dover Area, Eastern York, Hanover, Kennard-Dale, New Hope Academy Charter School, Northeastern, Red Lion Area, South Western, Spring Grove Area, Susquehannock, West York Area and York Suburban.

It is unclear if all of those schools will be participating in the new show, but Encore might have added York Catholic to its lineup of participants, Bergdoll said.

Eric Thiegs, who directs shows at Red Lion, said he was sad to see the event moved from the Strand.

"Red Lion is still considering its Encore participation," he said.

While the Rosies were held in May, Encore will be held in April -- which is closer to when the high school musical season ends, Bergdoll said.

"The kids look forward to the awards show every year, and Encore will only enhance that," she said.

Details: Encore will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at Central York. Matt Belanger from WGAL 8 will serve as the

master of ceremonies.

More than 500 student actors, dancers, musicians and backstage workers will participate in the event, and representatives from each participating school will be part of a musical finale.

Awards will be given in eight categories: best male performer, best female performer, best production number, best overall performance, most creative or original performance, best small ensemble performance, best dance performance and judges' award.

"It's an inspirational evening for the performers and guests," Bergdoll said.

Tickets are $12 and available on the Central York website at or by calling 866-967-8167.
