Chocolate and wine: A marriage that will last

In an obligatory nod to Valentine cliches, treat your sweetheart to chocolate - lots of chocolate. Kick up the "wow" factor in your wooing, however, with hand-crafted, award-winning wines paired with chocolates from around the world during the ValenWine's Day Celebration from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at participating wineries, including several in York and Adams counties. Tickets are $10 per person or $15 per couple. A complete list of particpating wineries is available at

Bring the kids

For the couple who doesn't mind the cold, head to AvalancheXpress at Heritage Hills Resort, in York Township, for some snow tubing fun. Couldn't find a babysitter? Bring the kids - the resort announced on its Facebook page it will be opening restaurant Bogey Macaws early at 11 a.m. Friday and Monday, Feb. 17., as well as a Kiddie Lane on the tubing runs for children ages 3-6. Information: 717-755-0123

Stroll with your sweetie

Alternatively, lead your lover on a Sweetheart Hike from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, at Rocky Ridge County Park. Participants will meet in the Oak Timbers Parking Area and join Parks Program Coordinator Jeri Jones on a 2-mile walk through the dark forest. Registration is suggested. Information: 717-428-1961.

Fire up the fun

Bring some heat to the kitchen by firing up one of the recipes from our food blog, "Food for Thought," at Can you say Chocolate Chip Cookie-Stuffed Soft Pretzels? You don't need to, but you do need to give them a try with your special someone. Bonus: You can shape them into hearts. Make it a date by shopping together at Central Market in downtown York for fresh, local ingredients first.

Swing with your sweetheart

Take a step into the romantic dim lights of the speakeasy days of the '20s and '30s for the annual Prohibition Dance from 9 p.m. to midnight at York Dance Studio, 324 W. Market St., York. Don your flapper dresses and suits for this dapper affair, and brush up on your Charleston as you swing away to the sounds of Ben Mauger's Roaring '20s Orchestra. There will be East Coast and Balboa lessons starting at 7:45 p.m. Private lessons are $7. Tickets are $10 for students, $15 general admission. Information: 717-659-1308.
